I'm so frustrated

I´m hella salty yal. I got a Zen Stone music player the other day...

it´s a 1 gigabyte player thing and I´m juiced about it cuz I luv cheap alternatives to the the Ipod. That mentality is probably why I have used technics and I use Torq instead of Serato actually. haha cheap ass. Anyway... I just finished my laundry and I left the goddamn thing in my cargo pocket. It's so small, it's not my fault... I think I'm going to sue Zen...we're in America after all.
It won't turn on (yet...)... I mean I can plug it in via USB to my computer and still add and delete files and play files directly from it but the bug won't turn on. Hopefully it's like my phone that I dropped in the lake in that it will be okay in a few days. Pray for it.

buy link...haha
I would be bumping this track by Treasure Fingers on it if it was working.
Treasure Fingers - Cross the Dancefloor

Paper Planes

Hey, this is DJ Brantron aka Brandon Tron, a new contributor to the blog. I'm a Seattle DJ and artist, trying to make a name for myself. I play everything, but my specialty is electro, house, hip hop, and indie. Look forward, to me writing more, in the future.

Paper Planes, is arguably the hottest track off of M.I.A.'s new album Kala. The best part of the track is the gun shot and cash register samples; it makes the song. When M.I.A. performed it on the Letterman Show, they censored out the gun shots and M.I.A. got pissed. Rightfully, so. Here's a couple of my favorite remixes of this track. First, there's the instrumental version; useful for making your own remix. Then, there's the remix ft. Bun B and Rich Boy--they spit some hot verses on it. Also, there's the Sri Lankan version by Esau Mwamwaya. It's pretty dope. I can understand a word he's saying, but it sounds cool. Last, but not least is a Cumbia version by Sonido Martines. Not my favorite, but it deserves a listen. If you want to listen to the original version or the rest of the album, you should buy it off M.I.A. - Kala - Paper Planes or better yet, put it on your Christmas lists and maybe somebody will buy it for you.

Paper Planes (Instrumental) - M.I.A.

Paper Planes ft. Bun B and Rich Boy - M.I.A.

Esau Mwamwaya - Tengazako

Paper Planes (Guachito Remix) - M.I.A.

Also, there's the original, kid safe version, without the gunshots.

Special Thanks to the Mad Decent Blog, for the tracks.

Christmas Jams

So LA based hip-hop label Stones Throw has a new compilation out (what an adventurous route to go guys! Only kidding of course.) Anyway, the compilation is for Christmas music, and it's got all kinds of rare, obscure songs that make Christmas In Hollis seem like a Bing Crosby staple. The genres run the gamut from jazz classics (think Charlie Brown's Christmas) to a ghettotech version of Twelve Days of Christmas by the 69 Boyz and the Quad City DJs. Think of this as the urban hipster reply to John Water's Christmas album. Go buy it at any Urban Outfitters or online here. Some of the better tracks below.

Vince Guaraldi - Skating - A classic from the best Christmas album ever, and surprisingly we done sampled this shit back in highschool for the Def Nephews, (I'll post that song up too, if I can find it.)

Hard Call Xmas - My Christmas Bells - This 80's rap song jacks the format to LL's Rock the Bells, with hilarious results!

The Soul Saints Orchestra - Santa Got A Bag Of Soul - I think this song is about Santa smoking weed, but I'm not sure. Either way it's pretty funky.

James Brown - Go Power At Christmas Time - More funky shit from the Godfather of Soul

Free Design - Close Your Mouth (It's Christmas) - A truly out there song, even by Stones Throw standards, this is probably as weird as Christmas music can get.

And the winner is....

Quad City DJ's, The 69 Boyz and K-Nock - What I Want For Christmas - Now that I think about this, it may be my favorite ghetto-tech song ever, and it doesn't even curse once. Backed by a Bambaataa sampling beat and two hilarious "12 days of Christmas" style countdowns of gifts, this is the creme of the crop.

Here's an example of the lyrical mastery of these groups

K-Nock "Christmas day, the birth of Christ no doubt/ that's what it's all about/Go ahead and stop the beat for a sec/ and show some respect"

BRILLIANT!

Remember to go out and buy this shit, they got the CDs at Urban and the vinyl at http://www.turntablelab.com/

Wednesday Heckuv Late Post

Sorry yal for the late post (I usually do them Wednesdays thangs) things have been kind of a mess lately between finals ending and planning for a once a month party I’m throwing with DJ Pryme..it's gonna be the jump-off for real fo rio. It’s gonna be hot sauce; save your tips. Anyway Since things are going sort of busy right now I decided to just post my reviews I did for RainyDawg radio. They’re a little more formal than I’d put on this blog but that’s how it is.

Velella Velella – Fight Club EP
Spokane natives, Velella Velella (now Seattleites) have just released this EP and it is a banger. Their sound sounds much more refined and distinct in this EP. The first track, "Alex Boom Selector", is a great last-call Saturday night/really-Sunday-morning party dance track. The song is steady a build-up with lyrics like “Move your feet/Shake your fists” which culminates into “Don’t need no money/It’s Sunday morning” which at this point sounds like the most profound thing you’ve realized all night. The third track, “Cause Those People Get Free Airline Tickets” begins with guitar distortion and then transforms into a psychedelic synthesized dance track with a vocoded melody. The last song, “Brass Ass” is a slower song but loaded with electric pianos and retro square lead melodies. A definite must have for all contemporary Seattleite music-heads.

Mr. Oizo - Moustache (Half a Scissor)
Famous for his electro track, “Flat Beat”, Mr. Oizo proves he is still on the cutting edge for the French electro scene. This album is much more “electro” sounding than his 1999 release “When Analog Worms Attach”. His choppy sampling style from his first LP is still heard in this album but complemented nicely with dark electro stabs. This can be heard in the hypnotic melody of “Latex”. “1$44” is another dark track (seems to be a theme for this album) with a funky syncopated synth layered over a simple drum loop that unexpectedly sounds doper, but not doper than “Half a scissor”. This song is mad hype. Starts off with some crazy highly ring modulated sample that acts like percussion and then a little over a minute the banger starts. Drums are over-compressed but it makes the snare have that oh so “Ed Banger” crunch. Check it out!

Roy is cooking in the kitchen with my ex-roommate Brenton. Two wonderful men battling over me basically. I got some cool new disco stuff for next Wednesday so keep it up!

COLOURS

Jen Stark does incredible paper sculptures and really cool drawings. If you like looking at pretty colours and shapes, I would suggest checking out her website. Definitely a good source for inspiration. So google blogger post composer tells me that I am spelling colours wrong. Does this piss British people off? Or is Google smart enough now to not tell people from England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc. that they are wrong? Because I'm pretty sure both spellings are acceptable. If one day our reader base gets into the double digits and someone from a U spelling country reads this, let me know, I'm interested.

Heads up for Friday or Saturday's Post: Veryl's Jamnesty International Guatemala Union Benefit Hip-Hop Concert for Solidarity was tonight, I took a bunch of pictures. Something to look forward to if thats your kind of thing.

R.I.P. Pimp C

“THAT WAS MY NIGGA. GOOD MOTHERFUCKIN DUDE. NOT MANY LIKE HIM. ALWAYS KEPT IT REAL AND WAS A CHAMPION FOR THE SOUTHERN RAP MOVEMENT! A TRUE KING! U WILL B MISSED BROTHER. LUV U MAN”-- LIL JON

“It’s sad to see legends leave us. Especially hip hop legends.. I'm just glad I had a chance to work with him, and know him personally... may he rest in peace...”-- Diamond (previously of Crime Mob

“I was so privileged to have not only got the chance to meet Pimp C, but I got to actually talk about real things, about this game and life. I will never forget the things he taught me, he was the realest person I knew. He may be gone in the physical, but he will be with Us Forever and ever...No matter what he said or did it always made me think about my life and I’m sure he touched others the same. You in a better place now Homey...My Deepest Condolences to his Family, Big brother Bun, and everyone that he touched while he was here that loved him as much as I did. We gonna Miss him very much. Long Live The Pimp...Rest In Peace Chad Butler. And It’s Still U.G.K. 4 Life.-- Mickey ‘Memphitz’ Wright

"I guess what i want to say is that UGK hands down influenced an entire generation of musical artists and Pimp C's voice was the base and the backbone for the entire southern rap sound. If his voice never hit a record, southern rap wouldn't be as special as it is. It'd be 10,000 wanna be NYC MC's down here wishing they could get an in, instead of taking the reigns for themselves and making it happen."-- Matt Sonzala, houstonsoreal.blogspot.com

"Sending my condolences to his family...and the game has lost another talented soldier. RIP Pimp C"-- Yung Berg

More Ratatat Remixes from Vol. II

More songs from the Ratatat-Remixes Vol. II album. This one is far superior to their first and their choices for acapellas are almost totally legit (there's a Memphis Bleek song on here just to show you their compassionate side though). Here's a sampling of the best of the album, not sure where you can get it in toto, I got it at their live show, but i'm a boss like that, so without further ado...

Jay-Z ft. Biggie Smalls - Allure (Ratatat Remix) - Never been able to listen to this whole song originally because the Neptunes beat is so terrible, but they do it up real big, and give a way more "Carlito's Way" sound than Pharell could hope for in his lifetime.

Young Buck, Game and Ludacris - Stomp (Ratatat Remix) - Best track off the album bar-none, this is the heater-est of them all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Z-Ro, Devin the Dude and Juvenile - The Mule (Ratatat Remix) - Great overlooked verses by all three, especially Juvenile who has a Jamaican thing going, but surprisingly makes it work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Slim Thug, TI and Bun-B - Three Kings (Ratatat Remix) - Never heard this song before but its a good one.

Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z - Glock Nines (Ratatat Remix) - Another great epic beat, with samples of Beanie's freestyle battle with Cassidy, pre "Hustler" days. Also throws on the Jigga verse from Watchers Pt. II for good measure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Peace,

Typical

It been raining in Seattle for three days. Non stop. No joke. I saw a puddle eat a car on my way to school. Here is a photo from the local news, its like that everywhere.

Anyways, heres you link for the day, its a short film, very appropriate subject matter. I like the cinematography, the acting is ok, but I think the background story is kinda weakly portrayed. Let me know what you think.

A Wu-tang picture that doesn't feature Cappadonna, who as some people say "sucks and has ruined multiple Wu-Tang songs."

In respect to the Wu-Tang Show in two weeks as well as their album dropping in about a week, I've put up my favorite song from the new album featuring George Clinton himself.

Links N Such

So I've been thinking deep on how I would go about this whole blog thing. I wanted to make it something that can be a consistent thing. So I figured from here on I would post one link to something I found innovative/original/inspiring/cool everyday, something small to make your eyes smile. Also, if I am working on something, I'll throw in some self promotion here and there.

Today we begin with a video I found. This was a runner up for the 2007 Adobe(tm) Design Achievement Award. Its a short student animation about a lobster. I like the colors and the girls voice. Enjoy.
